As smartphones outnumber dumb ones
With news that Smartphones now outnumber feature phones in Canada, there are serious implications for businesses on how to adjust their strategies both internally and externally. While much has been written about the move toward mobile marketing and mobile payments, there has not been a lot talked about the inherent dangers of a world in which more and more corporate and proprietary information is stored on smartphones – which have primitive security at best, and could easily be lost and picked up by someone else.
Krista Napier, the IDC Canada analyst in charge of mobility, said the bring your own device phenomenon in the workplace is getting very difficult for IT departments to manage.
“The multi-device support for IT departments is becoming very important,” Napier said. “They’re realizing that having a single smartphone in the workplace is really hard to do, and not practical.”
